Crooked Frame Haunts Softball in Loss to Mounties

The Riverside City College softball team came out of the gates hot in a non-conference game against the Mt. San Antonio College Mounties on Friday afternoon. The Tigers allowed a four-run lead to slip away after allowing the Mounties to plate eight runs in the sixth inning leading to a tough loss.

Riverside struck first by plating three runs in the first inning to set the tone. After two quick outs, freshman catcher Cassidy Cooper sparked a two-out rally by reaching base via hit by pitch, backed by a single from sophomore first baseman Alicia Fitzgerald to keep the ball rolling. Sophomore second baseman Sarah Franco-Colis drove Cooper home a batter later by barreling a double to right center field. Sophomore pitcher Chloe Lockhart capped the inning with a two RBI double that faded into the left center gap, plating Sa. Franco-Colis and Fitzgerald, to snag an early 3-0 lead.

Mt. San Antonio struck back with a two spot in the top of the fourth inning, but the Tigers mirrored their outcome in the bottom half of the frame to maintain the distance. Cooper dug in with the bases loaded and punched a single to center field, scoring freshman shortstop Adrianna Montalvo. Freshman left fielder Destinee Gonzales, who reached on a throwing error, came around to score a batter latter on Mt. SAC's second throwing errorof the inning.

The Tigers plated one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a double from A. Montalvo, but the scoring ended there. Mt. SAC went on to plate eight runs in the following inning highlighted by two defensive miscues that lead to a grand slam and eventually a 10-6 loss.

Lockhart (1-3) was tabbed with the loss after going the distance. She allowed 10 runs, seven earned, on 12 hits and fanned two batters.

Sa. Franco-Colis and Lockhart each recorded two hits, while A. Montalvo paced the offense going 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored.
