Doubles Teams Advance at CCCAA State Championships
OJAI, Calif., - El Camino College sputtered in singles competition but had two doubles teams advance after day one of the CCCAA Men's Tennis State Championships at the Ojai Valley Tennis Club in Ojai, Calif.
In the Round of 128, Connor Davis and Hollard Choi kicked things off with mixed results. Davis fell to Nicola Anderegg of San Diego Mesa in straight sets, going down 6-2, 7-5.
Choi, meanwhile, was able to pull out a three-set victory (6-4, 2-6, 6-3) over Steven Sandoval of Glendale College to advance to the Round of 64.
In the Round of 64, Choi saw his singles tournament come to an end as he lost to Younes Kodiji of American River, the No. 1 seed from Northern California, by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Trey Vasquez had a bye into the Round of 64 where he took on Quoc Tran of Orange Coast College, who also received a bye. Vasquez could not advance as he lost in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles action, Andre Dinh and Seitaro Tanaka lost their Round of 128 matchup against Pablo Gentile and Austin Reynolds of Grossmont by a score of 6-1, 6-2.
But the duo of Choi and Stephen Whitman got the Warriors on the winning track as they scored a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Kien Dang and Steven Vang of Cosumnes River in the Round of 64.
Davis and Vasquez also advanced to day two but had to win two matches in order to do so. They defeated Ricardo Campos and Will Molenkamp of Palomar in a three-set thriller (6-1, 3-6, 10-8) and then won another three-set marathon (6-2, 6-7, 11-9) over Daniel Alves and Stephen Morley of Folsom Lake, the No. 7 seed from Northern California.
The doubles teams will return to action Friday for a chance to advance to the Round of 16 and Quarterfinals.
