Holly Hopwood's two goals led the West Valley women's soccer team to a resounding 4-2 win over American River in the 2018 season opener Tuesday in Saratoga. Hopwood buried a shot from the left side of the box after fielding a goal kick from WVC keeper Samantha Coelho to put the Vikings (1-0) on the board in the 10th minute. Ashley Wallace made it 2-0 on a helper from Payton Stauble at 29'. April Lopez found the back of the net off an Alex Spatola assist in the 56th minute to answer an ARC goal at the start of the second half. Hopwood put it away five minutes later, taking a feed from Katie Bonvicino and blasting a shot from the right past Beaver keeper Josie Gover. Bianca Avila scored for ARC (0-1) just before the clock expired to make it 4-2. The Vikings head to Ventura to take on San Diego City (8/31) and East LA (9/1) in the prestigious Ventura College Showcase.
