Mounties Baseball Comes From Behind To Win First Game of CCCAA Super Regional

Mounties close out Game 1 with five-runs in the ninth-inning.

(Riverside, CA) Behind a five-run ninth-inning, eighth-seed Mt. SAC (25-18) turned a 4-3 deficit into an 8-4 victory over third-seed and host Riverside (32-11) in Game 1 of the California Community College Athletic Association Southern Super Regional on Thursday.

With two out and runners on second and third in the top of the ninth, Caleb Ellis (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2B) doubled down the left field line to score pinch runner Micahel Rosales and Jacob Dominguez (1-for-4, R) to put the Mounties up, 5-4. Alex Gonzalez reached first on a throwing error on the following at-bat, then advanced to second while Eills scored on the play.

Up 6-4, Michael Sandoval (1-for-5, RBI, R, 3B) tripled to right-center, scoring Gonzalez and putting Mt. SAC ahead, 7-4. In the following at-bat, Albert Luevano (3-for-5, 3 RBI, R, 3B) singled, driving home Sandoval to put the Mounties up for good, 8-4.

Steven Ordorica (7-1) retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to secure the victory for Mt. SAC. Ordorica earned the win, pitching 1.1 innings of relief and striking out one. Starter Noah Woodall threw six innings, surrendered four runs and struck out five.

Derek Zavala (1-for-5, RBI) stole two bases for the Mounties, while teammates Gonzalez and Kyle Koontz (2-for-4) stole one each.

Game 2 of the best-of-three series will take place at Riverside on Friday, May 10, at 2 p.m. If necessary, Game 3 will happen on Saturday, May 11, at 1 p.m., also at Riverside.
