Men’s Water Polo Drops Conference Opener

TORRANCE, Calif. --- El Camino College opened South Coast Conference action with a tough 15-13 loss to visiting Rio Hondo on Wednesday afternoon at the ECC Aquatics Center.

The Warriors (7-7, 0-1) fell behind 4-1 after one quarter and spent the rest of the match trying to catch the Roadrunners (3-8, 1-2).

Bronson Garel and Matheus Trefilio led the Warriors with four goals apiece and Zackary Johnson added three but it was not enough.

The Roadrunners were led by Jaime Albarran and Aaron Ayala as they each had four goals on the day with Alexander Duenez and David Gutierrez adding three apiece.

The Warriors were able to overcome their three-goal deficit in the third quarter, outscoring the Roadrunners 4-2 in the period to knot the match up at 8-8 going into the final period.

But the Roadrunners scored seven of the first 10 goals in the fourth to take a commanding 15-11 lead with 2:25 left and they were able to hold on for the win.

The Warriors will return to action on Friday as they head to the Saddleback Tournament to face Merced and Ventura.
