Softball Splits Four Games Last Week

El Camino College split four games last week with one conference win over Rio Hondo and one non-conference victory against Antelope Valley sprinkled in with a conference loss and non-conference defeat at Palomar.

The Warriors opened the week on Tuesday with a 13-2 run-rule South Coast Conference victory over Rio Hondo. The Warriors jumped out to a 5-0 lead and then used an eight-run sixth to seal the win. Sarah Reels went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBI. Skylar Sanchez went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI.

The Warriors then headed to Mount San Antonio to take on the undefeated Mounties. The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the first but the Mounties answered with four in their half of the inning. After the Warriors cut the deficit to 4-3 in the top of the second, the Mounties answered with two of their own in the bottom half of the frame and then added three runs in the third and three in the fifth to score the run-rule victory on a walk-off two-run homer.

The Warriors managed just three hits against the Mounties, but two of them were RBI extra-base hits with Leah Madden hitting an RBI double and Sanchez adding a two-run homer.

On Friday, the Warriors traveled to Palomar and played two very different games. In the first game, the Comets edged the Warriors 2-1 in a well-pitched game by both sides. Liz Cortez allowed just two runs, one earned, on only three hits. She walked two and struck out two. But India Caldwell was just a touch better for Palomar with a complete-game win, allowing just one run on five hits. She walked one and struck out seven.

In the wildest game of the week, the Warriors stormed from behind to score a 15-9 win over Antelope Valley in eight innings.

The Warriors trailed 4-0 after two innings and 6-1 after three. But they scored six unanswered runs to take a 7-6 lead in the sixth. The Marauders put up three in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-7 advantage heading into the final frame.

But Cortez hit an RBI single with runners on second and third to trim the deficit to 9-8 and then Sanchez came around to score the tying run on a throwing error by the left-fielder on the same play.

In the eighth, Leah Madden hit a two-run triple and Jamelah Lewis had a two-run single to highlight a six-run inning and put the game away for ECC.

The Warriors return to action on Tuesday afternoon to face Long Beach in an SCC contest. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
