Slow start sinks Vaqueros in 64-49 loss to Butte

Butte roared out to a 17-4 lead early in the second quarter on Saturday night on the way to a 64-49 win over SBCC on Day 2 of the Vaqueros' MTXE Crossover at the Sports Pavilion.

Chardonnay Jones paced the Roadrunners (2-0) with 15 points off the bench. Chloe Mayer hit 4-7 from 3-point country and added 14 points.

Jordan Parkhurst knocked down 4-8 from long range and led the Vaqueros (1-1) with 16 points and four steals. Sophia Torres had her second straight double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Butte outshot the Vaqueros 44.2 to 26.8% and outrebounded them 46-29. The visitors also enjoyed a big 32-10 advantage in bench points.

The Vaqueros trailed 13-4 after a quarter and 31-16 at halftime.

"We played so hard and our shots were just not falling," said 16th-year coach Sandrine Krul. "And we played them even in the second half (33-33). Butte is a very good team.

"As I always say: 'We are never as good as we think we are when we win and we are never as bad as we think we are when we lose."

In other games on Saturday, Ohlone downed Taft 59-44 and Chaffey edged Copper Mountain 74-73 on two free throws by Elyanna Rios with six seconds remaining.
