MSJC Volleyball Sweeps RCC, Falls to Mesa

The MSJC volleyball team hosted a pair of matches on Wednesday afternoon and came away with a split as they defeated Riverside City College 3-0 and dropped a match to San Diego Mesa.

In the opening match of the day MSJC dominated the first set against RCC as they won 25-9.  The Eagles would go on to win the second set by a score of 25-17 and finished the match off with a third set win 25-16.  Luci Villafana led the way with 9 kills in the match while Grace Tapia was right behind her with 8.  Setter Alex Sotello passed out 24 assists in all during the victory.  Ruby Ruiz and Kayla Thompson led the defense with 12 digs a piece and Tapia and Aleya Starnes both had a pair of solo blocks with Starnes also picking up 3 block assists.

The second match of the day saw the Eagles suffer their first loss of the season as they fell to San Diego Mesa 17-25, 15-25, and 17-25.  Villafana again had 9 kills in the match followed by Starnes with 5 while Ruiz and Chanelle Ongchangco both had 4.  The MSJC defense did pick up 50 digs in the match with Villafana leading the way with 12, both Ruiz and Thompson had 11.  Starnes continued to be strong in the middle as she had 2 solo blocks and 2 block assists.

MSJC now stands at 3-1 on the season and now has a week to prepare for another triangular home match on Wednesday September 8th.  On the 8th MSJC will host MiraCosta College at 10 AM and then play Los Angeles Mission at 4 PM.
