With an entirely new team and coaching staff, it took a little time for the Cerritos College women's soccer to find their footing to start the 2021 season. The Falcons showed they are progressively getting better with each game, as the Falcons posted their first win of the season, as they defeated host Irvine Valley College, 1-0 on Friday. The goal was also the first of the season and it was scored by a player seeing their first action of the year. Cerritos will now host Taft College at 2:00 p.m. next Friday.

The win was also the first for first-year Cerritos interim head coach Tessa Troglia.

Already showing more of an offensive presence against the Lasers (1-5-1), the Falcons were able to work the ball into scoring position numerous times through the first half. Still unable to break into the scoring column, Cerritos was able to increase the pressure in the second half and finally got into the scoring column in the 79th minute to the sheer exuberance of the entire team.

On the play, freshman Meghan Legayada (Sunny Hills HS) sent the ball through to freshman Hailey Lopez (California HS), whose shot found the inside of the goal post for the goal. It was the first game of the season for Lopez, while Legayada returned to the lineup after missing the last game with an injury.

The win would not be complete without the play of sophomore goalkeeper Anahi De Leon (Lynwood HS/East Los Angeles College), who recorded eight saves to post the shutout. The Falcons also received excellent defensive play from freshmen defenders Celeste Dominguez (Downey HS), Vanessa Quintanar (California HS), Mary Morales (Santa Ana HS) and defensive midfielder Giselle Ramirez (Smidt Tech HS).
