Modesto Junior College Volleyball began the 2019 season this past week facing Merced College, West Hills College – Coalinga, and Las Positas College. 

8/28/19 Pirates set sail to Merced to face the Blue Devils. Merced has had the Pirates number the last few years and in a close match, the Blue Devils took another win, defeating the Pirates 3-1. The Pirates had a strong offensive showing for their first match with a .203 hitting efficiency in the first 3 sets. Set 4 got to the Pirates who ended the match with a .114 hitting efficiency.

Sophomores Ambria Schneringer (Central Catholic HS) and Rhiannon Genilla (Manteca HS) each had their first double-double of the season. Schneringer running the offense gave the Pirates 31 assists and 11 digs while Genilla lead the attack with 16 kills and 11 digs. Freshmen Camryn Wong (Beyer HS) lead in digs with 14 and Alyssa Stiles (Ceres HS) lead with 3 aces while giving the Pirates 9 kills.

8/30/19 Pirates hosted the annual Modesto Quad with Cosumnes River College, West Hills College – Coalinga, and Las Positas College. MJC played West Hills and Las Positas and took the wins from both teams, 3-1 and 3-2 respectively.

Scherninger and Genilla once again earned double-doubles in each match. Genilla: West Hills – 10 kills & 10 digs, Las Positas – 14 kills & 18 digs. Schneringer: West Hills – 12 kills & 24 assists, Las Positas – 27 assists & 11 digs.

West Hills – Kills: Scherninger 12, Assists: Schneringer 24, Aces: Emma Gonzalez (Beyer HS) 4, Digs: Wong 15, Blocks: Stiles & Gonzalez 3.

Las Positas – Kills: Genilla 14, Assists: Schneringer 27, Aces: Teresa Benham (Sierra HS) 6, Digs: Genilla 18, Blocks: Skyy Goudeao (Gregori HS) 4.
