CYPRESS, CA - The Cypress Chargers women's water polo team (3-2, 0-1 OEC) faced West Valley (11-1), Palomar (5-5), and Mt. San Antonio (5-9) this past weekend at the Mt. SAC Invitational. The Chargers returned home with a three game winning streak defeating two top teams in California.
Cypress faced off against a tough opponent, West Valley College, in their first matchup of the weekend. The Chargers trailed throughout the game and were down three heading into the fourth quarter. The Chargers surged back with two goals early in the quarter by Ashley Slaton and Sam Worley. With two minutes to go, Worley found the net to tie the game up at 10. Coach Canner called a timeout with one minute left as he drew up a play for Sam Worley that executed the game winning goal. The Chargers tacked on one more goal by Jasmine Constance Castillo to win the game, 12-10.
The Chargers next match was against a top team from San Diego, Palomar College. After a back and forth first half, the Chargers led 5-4. Sam Worley scored two goals in each of the first two quarters and she continued to lead the Cypress offense during the weekend. Worley would stay hot in the third quarter as she scored three straight goals giving Cypress an 8-4 advantage. The story of the second half would be the Chargers defense as they shut out Palomar 6-0. Cypress would take game two 11-4.
In the final game of the weekend Cypress played the tournament host, Mt. San Antonio. The defensive battle was headlined by goalie, Emma Marsh, who recorded 13 saves and protected the Cypress net. Cypress would get out to a 5-0 lead and hold on to the victory, 8-4. Sam Worley yet again scored 5+ goals for the third straight game.
UP NEXT: Cypress will travel to Cuesta College for a two-day tournament this weekend (10/1-10/2) before they continue conference play at Saddleback College (10/6).
