Cypress Volleyball Splits Matches in Season Opener

Pasadena, CA- Cypress women's volleyball began their season with a double-header at Pasadena City College on Friday, August 27th. The Chargers took down Chaffey College in their first match (3-0) before falling to the Pasadena Lancers (3-1).

The Chargers were able to start their season on a positive note when they dominated Chaffey College in three sets. The Panthers did not have an answer for freshman star setter, Vanila Pulu-Suliafu, who had seven aces and 22 assists in the match. Freshman, Rachel Gonzales, led the Chargers with six kills while Mikayla Curry posted two solo blocks and two assisted blocks. Cypress cruised to a 3-0 victory winning the sets 25-15, 25-14, and 25-20. 

In their second match of the day, the Chargers faced off against the hometown Pasadena Lancers. Cypress got off to an early lead winning set one 25-19. PCC made some adjustments and ran away with set two after to the Chargers led, 6-5. In set three, Cypress stumbled out of the gate facing a 4-0 deficit. The Chargers fought back to knot it up at four, after Vanila Pulu-Suliafu recorded her first ace of the match. Cypress surged to a 13-12 lead looking to put away PCC. Th Lancers had a different idea as they rattled off six of the next seven points on their way to a comfortable, 25-19 victory. As the Chargers trailed two sets to one their backs were against the wall when they were tied 13-13 in set four. Pasadena City went on a tear where they scored twelve of the next fourteen points with the help of three aces. Cypress was unable to stop Lancer server, Kei'ana Pascua, who led them to a 25-15 victory. 

Up Next: After a 1-1 start the Chargers will head to Don Johnson Court for three home matches in a row. The Chargers will host a rematch against Chaffey College on Wednesday, September 1st at 5:00pm.
