Pirates keep on rolling with 8-1 win over Knights

SAN DIEGO -- The Orange Coast College women's team took its undefeated act on the road and came out with an 8-1 win over San Diego City College on Tuesday afternoon in a nonconference matchup.

Coast (7-0) took 5-of-6 singles matches, with straight-set wins coming from Madeleine Veltri (6-0, 6-3), Leanne Pascua (6-4, 6-3), Dianna Vu (6-1, 6-4) and Maria Hernandez (6-0, 4-0, retired). At No. 1 singles, Sedona Smith needed a third-set tiebreaker, but prevailed, 6-4, 6-7 (10-1).

Smith and her doubles partner Olivia Sipiora were pushed to a tiebreaker, but again, the Pirates were able to win the match, 9-8 (4). Veltri/Pascua (8-2) and Raelynn Palmer/Allison Dobrea (8-4) also came through with doubles wins.

The Pirates will again take to the road on Friday as they take on Antelope Valley (weather permitting), beginning at 2 p.m. OCC's next home match will take place on Tuesday, March 7 against Saddleback, also at 2 p.m.
