Women's volleyball team opens conference play with a sweep

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team had an easy time in its first Orange Empire Conference match of the season.

The Lasers cruised in a 25-13, 25-14, 25-11 win at Santiago Canyon Friday night.

IVC, ranked No. 12 in the state, improved its record to 4-1 overall.

Freshman opposite Jayli Nealy had another big match for the Lasers, finishing with 10 kills and five block assists. She also hit .412 on the night.

Freshman outside hitter Jaclyn Sanchez added nine kills and freshman middle blocker Kaitlyn Karsten had seven kills, hitting .700 and contributed three block assists.

Freshman outside hitter Angelina Griego finished with nine digs, freshman defensive specialist Elise Le had eight digs and freshman setter Maddie Harkey ran the offense with 30 assists and also had two aces.

IVC hit .338 on the night as a team

Irvine Valley plays two road matches next week. The Lasers are at Southwestern in a nonconference contest on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and then play at Riverside in a conference match on Friday at 6 p.m.
