Pirates start new streak with win over Hornets

FULLERTON -- Following a sudden stop to a historic unbeaten run through the Orange Empire Conference's regular season, the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team took its aggression out on Fullerton College with a convincing three-set win over the Hornets on Wednesday night.

The win comes on the heels of a tough, five-set loss to Irvine Valley on Friday that snapped an incredible unbeaten run through the regular season in OEC play. Since the conference picked up men's volleyball at the beginning of the 2017 season, the Pirates were a perfect 44-0 in Orange Empire Conference play (OCC lost to IVC in a conference championship match during the COVID-shortened 2021 season).

For the Pirates (13-3 overall, 5-1 in the OEC) on Wednesday night, they made quick work of the Hornets, winning 25-12, 25-18, 25-11. Sebastian Lara was nearly perfect against Fullerton with six kills on seven attempts with no errors to go along with an ace and two assisted blocks. Trent Douphner added four hills on five attempts and baffled the Hornets with a team-best six aces. Coast finished the night with 17 aces overall.

Hide Nakamura anchored the defense with seven digs, while setters Brock Henderson and Landon Seymour combined for 21 assists.

The Pirates will return to the Peterson Gym on Friday against Santiago Canyon College, beginning at 6 p.m.
