The West Valley women's soccer team took on two of the Big 8 Conference's best sides last weekend and emerged with a split.

The Vikings (3-4-1) hosted American River Friday and handed the Beavers (3-1-0) their first loss of the season. Kayla Potter took a Kylie Love feed at mid-pitch, broke free of the Beaver defense and put WVC on the board in the 6th minute. Sara Prough made it 2-0 at 17' off a helper from Potter. The Beavers made it interesting with a Galaxy Mijares goal at 55, but the Viking defense shut down ARC the rest of the way. WVC keeper Veronica Cook had five saves to earn the win.

WVC struck early against Sierra (4-1-0) Sunday afternoon. In a wild sequence in heavy traffic in front of the Sierra goal, Potter's shot was stopped by Wolverine keeper Gisselle Quintero. Potter passed the rebound to Prough, who's shot was denied by a Sierra defender. Prough gathered in the rebound and put it in the back of the net to make it 1-0 at 15'. The Wolverines answered with an Emily Hester goal at 33' and a Baileigh Zamudio strike at 40' to make it 2-1 at the half. Sierra pulled away in the second half with Lilliann Vogt (60') and Sheare Ford Barrera (72') scores.

The nine-game homestand continues for the Vikings this week. Cañada (2-2-1) comes to Saratoga Tuesday (9/21, 4:00pm kickoff), while San Joaquin Delta (5-0-0) visits Dick Schwendinger Field Thursday (9/23, 4:30pm kickoff).
