FOOTBALL: HORNETS WIN 96TH KEY TO COUNTY GAME

After an 85-0 rout of Santa Ana at home on Saturday, the Hornets will hold on to the key for another year.

Fullerton came out swinging in the 96th Key to the County game scoring at will on all but two possessions. FC's first touchdown came on the game's first punt (6th play) when Robert Downs took the ball 63-yards to the Don endzone. From there, the rout was on as the Hornets went on to score 29 points in the first quarter (7 short of the record). Sophomore receiver Markelle Raymond was unstoppable catching two out of his three touchdown passes in the first quarter that helped lift FC early.  

By the end of the first half, Fullerton was up a healthy 64-0, which broke the school record for most points in a half. The previous record was set last season against Grossmont College at 50 points. FC also broke the record for most points scored in a game snapping another record set last season at 79.

The Hornet defense played a stellar game holding their opponent to zero points. The last time FC had a shutout game was last season against Moorpark (57-0), and before that was against San Diego Mesa College in the 2008 National Bowl (26-0). Against Santa Ana, the previous shutout game was back in 1982, a 37-0 win. 

Special teams and defense played big roles in today's game with two touchdowns on punt returns (Downs 63 yards and Sean North 59 yards). The Hornet D scored on a blocked punt by Eric Graham that was returned 25-yards by Xavion Steele. They also held the Dons to -25 yards rushing and 180 yards passing. Santa Ana was forced to punt 11 times while the Hornets did not punt all game.
