Women's basketball team closes regular season with 63-point W

Irvine Valley celebrated its sophomores and came away with a dominant win on Wednesday night at home.

The Lasers defeated Santa Ana, 107-44, to end the Orange Empire Conference campaign and close out the regular season.

Next up for Irvine Valley, which is ranked No. 4 in the state and No. 1 in Southern California, is the announcement of the California Community College Athletic Association South region playoff pairings on Sunday.

IVC, which had already captured its fourth conference title in a row last week, improved its recore to 23-2 overall and 12-0 in the OEC. Santa Ana, which still has one game left, fell to 7-19 overall and 0-11 in conference.

It was the third time this season and second time in conference play that the Lasers have topped 100 points in a game.

They led, 34-15, after the first quarter, 57-25, at the half and, 88-36, after the three quarters.

Irvine Valley received contributions from all around. Six different players scored in double figures, led by sophomore guard Jessica Suruor with 23 points. She sank 7 of 14 shots from three-point range.

Sophomore guard Paola Roa added 22 points, three rebounds, three assists and six steals, freshman forward Sarah Matossian finished with 18 points and an impressive 17 rebounds to goa along with five asssists and five steals for the Lasers.

Freshman forward Paea Tafea chipped in 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocks, freshman guard Aliya Richmond had 12 points and nine rebounds and sophomore guard Samantha Uehara ended with 11 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Katie Nguyen contributed five rebounds and six assists in the win for IVC.

The Lasers shot 53.8 percent (41 of 91) from the field, made 13 three-pointers and out-rebounded Santa Ana, 65-26, in the game. IVC had 36 offensive rebounds, led by 14 offensive boards by Matossian.

Santa Ana 14 points from Heather Matthews and eight points each from Sophia Escalante and Crystal Moreno. Moreno had a team-high five rebounds in the defeat.
