College of the Canyons won its third straight match in shutout fashion, claiming a 5-0 conference victory over visiting West L.A. College on Tuesday.
The victory also represented the second straight shutout for Canyons (6-2-1, 2-0) which had previously defeated Glendale College by an 11-0 score on Sept. 30.
On Tuesday, it was sophomore Rebekah Brooks' three first half goals that gave the Cougars a big boost over a West L.A. (0-8-2, 0-3-0) team that was forced to play shorthanded.
The hat trick was the first of Brooks' Canyons career and upped her season total to 12, which is currently tied for third in the state and second in the conference.
Brooks scored an unassisted goal early in the 11th minute and repeated that same feat in the 17th minute.
Later, it was Brooks scoring by way of an assist from Jessie Bonsness to put the Cougars ahead 3-0.
COC sophomore Lauryn Bailey upper her season scoring total to four with a goal in the 43rd minute. Katie Russell was credited with an assist on the play, her team-leading third of the season, and Canyons took a 4-0 lead into halftime.
In the 88th minute it was Emma Amaya with a long strike to move the game to 5-0 for the Canyons side.
Kylie Yuzon (4-2-1) earned the victory despite not facing a shot on goal from the Wildcats. Hazel Saucedo played the second half in net for the Cougars.
West L.A. goalkeeper Wendy Nunez recorded 11 saves in the game but suffered the loss. Canyons earned six corner kicks to help aid the attack.
The Cougars are back on the road Friday, Oct. 7 vs. Bakersfield College. First touch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
