Galicia Goes the Distance as Warriors Beat Pasadena in CCCAA Regional Opener

TORRANCE, Calif. – Freshman Jimmy Galicia tossed a complete-game shutout as No. 2 El Camino College scored a decisive 6-0 win over No. 15 Pasadena Friday afternoon in game one of the CCCAA Baseball Southern California Regionals at Warrior Field.

Galicia was masterful on the bump for the Warriors (33-6) as he pitched his third complete-game of the season. He scattered five hits, all singles, walked two and struck out five to pick up his 10th win of the season.

He got some backup from his offense as the Warriors recorded 10 hits including two doubles with Joseph Borges leading the attack. The center fielder went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI while Spencer Palmer was 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored and two RBI. Taishi Nakawake also recorded a multi-hit game on Friday, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI. Jerry Granillo was 2-for-3 with two walks as he batted leadoff in game one while Spencer Long recorded the other hit for ECC.

For the Lancers (25-14), Gordon Ingebritson took the loss as he got knocked around in four innings of work. He allowed five earned runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out seven as his record fell to 6-4 on the season. Marco Martinez went 2-for-4 and Ryan Lewis was 2-for-3 for Pasadena, the lone offensive highlights in the opening game.

The Warriors opened the scoring in the second inning as Nakawake hit a one-out single through the right side of the infield to score Matt Beserra from second base. Granillo then singled up the middle to load the bases for the Warriors and, with two outs, Borges padded the lead with a two-run single through the left side to put ECC up 3-0 after two innings.

The fourth inning put the game essentially out of reach as Granillo and Casillas reached on walks. With one out, both runners advanced on a passed ball and then scored on a double by Palmer into the right-center field gap to put ECC up 5-0.

Galicia handled the rest from there as he allowed just one runner to reach second base in his final five innings of work. His only jam came in the fourth inning when the Lancers loaded the bases with two outs. But Galicia got first baseman Vic Zepeda to ground out to his counterpart at first base to end the threat. The Lancers would never get multiple base runners the rest of the way.

The teams will return to the field Saturday morning for game two of the series. The Lancers will be the designated home team and first pitch is set for 11 a.m. A win for ECC would secure the Warriors third straight trip to the CCCAA Super Regionals while a win for Pasadena would force a winner-take-all game three, which is slated to start 30 minutes after the conclusion of game two.
