Women’s Tennis Victorious in Conference Opener, Wins Sixth Straight

The Riverside City College women's tennis team opened Orange Empire Conference (OEC) play on Thursday afternoon against the Fullerton College Hornets. The Tigers set their sights on cruise control and routed the Hornets by the final score of 9-0.

Sophomore duo Maxelle Bernie and Torrey Mateljan anchored the efforts in the top positions. They teamed up to defeat Fullerton's top doubles squad, 8-5, and followed with wins in the top two singles positions. Bernie worked a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win, while Mateljan earned a two-set win at 6-2, 6-0.

Freshman Keeley Arendt and sophomore Miranda Cardenas remained undefeated on the year by hauling in an 8-4 win as the number two doubles team. Sophomore Hannah Stevenson and freshman Monica Madrid followed with an 8-0 sweep in the third position.

Arendt cruised to a two-set victory at the third position at 6-0, 6-3, while Stevenson followed with a 6-0, 6-3 win as the fourth singles player. Cardenas continued to swing it well with a two set victory at 6-1, 6-0 and Madrid capped it with a 6-1, 6-2 win.

Riverside (6-0, 1-0 OEC) will continue conference action on Tuesday, February 25 against Saddleback at home at 2 p.m.
