Vikings Win in Season Opener at San Diego Mesa

Vikings Win in Season Opener at San Diego Mesa

The Long Beach City College women's soccer team opened the season with a 3-0 win over San Diego Mesa College last Tuesday afternoon. In a game that ended 3-0, most would expect that the offense was the major story in the game. Although the offense was part of the opening day act, the team defense was the real story.

"We beat a really good team on the road today and it was because of our team defense", said Head Coach Eddie Nunes after the game. "It started with our forwards and the way they were able to force the Olympians to play through certain areas. That allowed the rest of the team to be organized and made a difficult task a little easier." Coach Nunes was really excited about the win over the San Diego powerhouse and expects both team will only get better.

The scoring started just after the halfway point of the first half when freshman forward Evelyn Sandoval found the back of the net. Her tap in came after a keeper save that put the ball back in the six-yard box for a second chance. Prior to the goal, Long Beach had a good portion of possession and was able to get into the shooting situation with a creative passing combination. Evelyn scored again to start the second half and then put the game out of range a few minutes later.

Long Beach plays again on Friday, Sept. 3 against Fullerton College. This will be the program's first official game on its new facility and with a 4 p.m. kickoff, expects to see a good crowd for the game.
