Rio Hondo College freshman Jose Penaloza scored in the 84th minute for the Roadrunner equalizer in a 2-2 draw at Irvine Valley College in both teams' season-opener on Tuesday.

Penaloza's strike came off the assist from sophomore Federico Hurtado and erased a late 2-1 Irvine Valley advantage after consecutive goals from Max Kleinhammes in the 35th and 36th minutes gave the Lasers the halftime lead.

Sophomore Fernando Guerrero got Rio Hondo on the board early, netting the season's opening goal in the 22nd minute thanks to the assist from sophomore Havier Zaragoza.

Freshman goalkeeper Jafet Salgado played the entire 90 mnutes in net and posted two saves in his Roadrunner debut.

Rio Hondo will play its next four games on the road, including a pair of matches this weekend in San Diego. On Friday (Aug. 30), the Roadrunners are at San Diego City College for a 3:15 p.m. non-conference match followed by an 11 a.m. contest at MiraCosta College on Saturday (Aug. 31.).
