Women's Basketball Clinch Big 8 Title; Prep for 29th Straight Playoff Run

Sierra women's basketball brings home their 5th Big 8 Championship in the last 10 years, and solidifies their place in the CCCAA playoffs with the #2 NorCal seed, prepping for the programs 29th straight postseason campaign.

Sierra clinched the 2022 title with a 12-2 league record and finished off the regular season with an 83-57 win over Cosumnes River College. Sierra shares the 2022 title with San Joaquin Delta College, also with a 12-2 Big 8 record.

"It feels really good to be conference champions and make it to the state playoffs." says Sophomore forward Kiki Griffen. "This is right where we were my freshman year so i'm glad we get to pick up where we left off but in an even better position."

The Wolverines, always a dominant force in CCCAA women's basketball, again dazzled us with an impressive season, going 23-3 in regular season play with an average of 79.8 points per game, field goal percentage of 38.8 and 46 rebounds per game. Sierra is also second in the state in assists, with an average of 20.1 per game.

As the #2 NorCal seed, the Wolverines will play the winner of Tuesday's Folsom Lake vs Monterey Peninsula game on Thursday, March 3 at 7:00pm in Rocklin.

"Winning the big 8 is a huge accomplishment, but it's just a milestone we achieved while we're working towards our big goal – state" says sophomore guard Devon Lewis. "We all have similar goals and mission statements. We're dedicated and all in to achieving everything we worked for."

The 2020 Wolverine squad made to to the state championship that year, but the tournament was cancelled just hours before tipoff due to Covid-19. As a result, no state champion was crowned in 2020, and after no 2021 season, Sierra is back and ready to make sure they have their shot at what would be the programs first state title since 1999.

"I think our player dynamic is what makes us special." says Griffen. "We all bring something to the team to achieve greatness. We compliment each other. We set each other up to be successful on the floor and it shows."
