West Valley rally falls just short in season finale at Valhalla

A furious West Valley comeback in the bottom of the ninth fell six feet short as Jacob Serpa's flyball to left was grabbed at the warning track to end the 2021 season. Serpa's drive came just after a Josiah Granados two-run homer brought the Vikings to within one run of Skyline. The Trojans escaped with the 8-7 win in the final game ever at Valhalla, the venerable WVC facility that will undergo a major remodel beginning this summer.

The Vikings (10-15) rallied from 7-0 and 8-5 deficits by chipping away with single runs in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings and two runs in both the fifth and ninth.

They almost pulled it off in the bottom of the ninth. Evan Meier singled and then stole second with two outs. Granados took Trojan reliever Gene Abourette deep to straightaway right and suddenly the Vikings were within a run of tying it up. When the ball left Serpa's bat, it appeared it may be headed for the trees beyond the left field fence, but Trojan leftfielder Stephan Blecha gloved it at the fence for the final out.

Meier paced the 13-hit Viking offense with a 3-for-5, RBI-double outing. Curran Ozawa-Burns completed a stellar Viking career by ripping a pair of doubles and scoring two highlight-reel runs. Granados had three RBI and Jacob Dressler had a double and scored in the fifth.
