COD Women’s Soccer chases away the Mustangs, 3-0

COD (6-3; 2-0) did well on all sides of the ball, as the Roadrunners grabbed their third clean sheet of the season and collected their first win over the Norco Mustangs (3-7-1; 1-2) in program history, 3-0.

Desert welcomed back fans to campus for the first time since March 9, 2020, nearly 19 months, and the Roadrunners did not disappoint.

The Roadrunners would get onto the scoreboard in the 7th minute, when freshman midfielder Monserrath Bedolla-Guzman (Thermal Coachella Valley) swept left in front of the net and pushed a pass to sophomore forward Jasmine Castillo (Indio Shadow Hills) who crushed a shot into the left side of the goal mouth for her seventh goal of the season, giving Desert an early 1-0 advantage.

Just before the first half water break, in the 22nd minute, Bedolla-Guzman grabbed her team leading sixth assist on the season, by poking a pass to sophomore midfielder Ashley Murguia (Indio H.S.) who launched a shot attempt from about 35 yards out and skipped into the back of the net, giving the home side a 2-0 lead.

Early in the second half, in the 52nd minute, freshman forward Yisel Ybarra (Thermal Desert Mirage) got her third assist on the season as she led a "jail break" down the field with a whole stampede of Mustangs trailing her and Castillo. Castillo took a shot, which caromed off of the Norco keeper and the ball got behind her, and Castillo tapped in the shot, for her eight goal of the season. Unfortunately, Castillo suffered an injury on the attack and had to rest the remainder of the game.

Freshman goal keeper Jessica Uribe (Indio Shadow Hills) grabbed her third clean sheet on the season, facing eleven shots, with three on goal.

The Roadrunners played the Mustangs for the first time in program history in 2014 and are now 1-3-1 all-time against Norco Mustangs. Desert has an 1-0-1 record against the Mustangs in Palm Desert.

The next game for Desert is on Tuesday, October 5th at the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles. The Roadrunners first played Mt. San Jacinto in 1997 and have an 6-26-6 record against the Eagles, including 1-12-5 record in San Jacinto. Desert is 2-0-2 against the Eagles in the last two seasons. The next home game for Desert is on Friday, October 8th against the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines. The Roadrunners first played San Bernardino Valley in 1998 and have an 10-28-5 record against the Wolverines, including 7-14-3 record in Palm Desert. The last time Desert defeated the Wolverines was in 2004, by a score of 3-2 in Palm Desert.
