Friday was a beautiful day at the beach for West Valley as the Vikings opened the Coast Conference home schedule with 5-0 sweeps of Fresno City and College of San Mateo. The scent of sunscreen was prevalent on a balmy afternoon in which WVC dropped only a single set in each match.

The Vikings (9-3, 4-0 Coast) got off to a good start in the opener against Fresno City (1-9, 1-3) as WVC 1's Katie Kishton and Flor Porras recorded a decisive 21-8, 21-13 sweep of Jasmine Heu/Kylie Kerney. Taylor Tullo/Elia Dueñas then closed out the opening flight with a 21-12, 21-19 win over Laney Amundson/Emma Penberthy in the 3's. WVC's Alina Valenti/Camdyn Albrecht took a tough 2's match 21-19, 21-15 over Avery Evans/Jill Penner to open the second flight. Keilli Voss/Kate Blackwell topped Rams Kelsie Valencia/Carli Vanek 21-9, 21-15 in the 4's and, in one of the most competitive matches of the day, Viking 5's Sydney Rogers/Abby McCormick came all the way back for an 18-21, 21-8, 15-6 reverse-sweep win over Julianna Lopez/Trystan Uphoff.

Things went much the same in the late match against the Bulldogs (4-4, 2-2). In the opening flight, Kishton/Porras dominated Angelina Estrada/Naomi Cremoux 21-9, 21-12 in the 1's, while Tullo/Dueñas held off Zooey Walsworth/Breanna Evans 21-17, 21-16 in the 3's. The second flight opened with a CSM forfeit in the 5's, while Valenti/Albrecht edged Alister Borabo/Ashley Chacon 21-15, 21-19 in the 2's. Opening day at the beach ended with another three-set battle, this time in the 4's. Voss/Blackwell dropped set one to Sophia Stemberga/Valerie Bruk 21-18, followed by an intense second set that went to Voss/Albrecht 27-25. The take-all third set went back-and-forth until Voss/Blackwell prevailed 15-12.
