On Tuesday in their season-opener, the Cerritos College women's soccer team scored two second half goals to help propel them to a 3-1 win at Southwestern College. The Falcons (1-0-0), who play all of their non-conference games on the road this season, will travel to Lake Tahoe Community College for a 4:00 p.m. game on Friday.

Freshman Lucia Yanez (El Rancho HS) got the first goal of the season for Cerritos, as she finished off a play in the 11th minute. Sophomore Valeria Corrilo (Dominguez HS) possessed the ball at midfield, turned and threaded a pass between a pair of Jaguar defenders to Yanez, who was able to chip a shot into the net.

In the 63rd minute, the Falcons scored what would be the eventual game-winner, as sophomore Maria Campos (Paramount HS) found sophomore Nia Thompson (Kennedy HS/Alabama A&M University) streaking toward the net. The pass connected with Thompson, who found herself along against the goalkeeper, and finished the play with a nice goal. Thompson would play a role in the insurance goal the Falcons scored in the 83rd minute, as well.

Controlling the ball on the Cerritos side of the field, she sent a pass into Southwestern territory, where Yanez was there to score her second goal of the game on a nice left-footed shot.

Freshman goalkeeper Melanie Corona (El Rancho HS) posted saves in her first collegiate match.
