Cold second half costs SBCC in 63-47 loss

Monterey Peninsula went on a 29-4 second-half run on Thursday night to defeat SBCC 63-47 in the opening round of the 30th annual Monterey Bay Classic.

The Vaqueros were tied 30-30 at halftime and went ahead 36-32 on a basket by Kile Kleiner with 17:48 to play. Tim Harper hit a 3-pointer to ignite the 29-4 burst over the next 12:27, giving the Lobos a 61-40 advantage with 5:21 remaining.

Rashaun Wooden scored nine of his 14 points in the second half for Monterey (4-5). Harper had 10 of his 13 in the last 20 minutes.

Daniel Arzate topped the Vaqueros (0-7) with 12 points and Adrian Juilland-Johnson had 10.

SBCC made just 27.0% from the field and 12-15 from the free-throw line but only hit one 3-pointer in 19 attempts. The Lobos shot 39.7% and made just 4-24 from long distance.

The Vaqueros will battle Hartnell in a consolation semifinal on Friday at 3 p.m. Unbeaten Irvine Valley (7-0) knocked off Hartnell 73-52 in Thursday's 7 p.m. game.
