The Chabot women's basketball team crushed Fresno City 81-54 in Round 2 of the CCCAA Northern California Regionals on Saturday, Feb. 29 to move one win away from the State Finals.

The No. 4 seeded Gladiators (23-6), who have won nine in a row, will host No. 5 Merced (24-5) in Round 3 at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 7. Merced is coming off an 82-50 win over Folsom Lake in Round 2.

Chabot's amazing sophomore Zakiya Mahoney, an All-State First-Team pick, paced the Gladiators with 33 points against Fresno, making three 3-pointers. Mahoney, who was offered by Texas Tech after her freshman season, has now scored 1,002 points in her Chabot career, second only to De Zira Hall (1,052) on the college all-time list.

Nyah Willis added 17 points in the blowout of Fresno with three 3-pointers. Kayla Tahaafe (12 points) and Adorah Buggs (10 points) also reached double digits.

The Gladiators beat Merced 74-60 on Jan. 28 in the San Jose City tournament, when Mahoney led the way with a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds. Tahaafe and Buggs both had 14 points and Willis added 14 points.

Chabot was ranked No. 5 in the CCCWBCA North Region Final Poll, two spots behind Merced. Thus, the stage is set for a spectacular showdown on Saturday night at Gladiator Gymnasium.

During a season of impressive accomplishments, the Gladiators finished Coast-North play in a three-way tie for first place with CCSF and Skyline.
