Pirates move to 2-2 after split at Mendocino Invitational

The Porterville College women's volleyball team earned a 3-1 win over host Mendocino College on Saturday and nearly came home with another win but fell in five sets to Lassen College as part of the Mendocino Invitational.

Freshman Juliet Garcia continued to impress early in her first year with the Pirates as she combined for 16 kills over the two matches to lead the PC offense.

The Pirates closed out their day with a 25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20 win over host Mendocino. Garcia slammed down 7 kills to lead Porterville while sophomores Madysen Clower and Emily Baeza both had 5 kills each.

Maggie Zanazzo paced the offense with 17 assists and Derica Ferris had a team-best 7 digs to go along with 4 aces.

Lassen 3, Porterville 2
It was nearly a perfect day for the Pirates, but they couldn't capitalize on a 2-0 lead and fell to Lassen by final scores of 19-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-14, 15-9 in the day's opening match.

Garcia had 9 kills and 2 blocks to lead the Pirates. Clower added 6 kills while Baeza had a good all-around match with 5 kills, 5 digs, and 3 aces.

Zanazzo also played well with 23 assists, 4 digs, and 2 aces while Ferris added 8 digs and 3 aces.

Up next: Porterville, now 2-2 overall, returns to action on Wednesday (Sep. 5) when the Pirates travel to Monterey Peninsula College for a 5 p.m. non-conference match.
