Men’s Soccer: Rio Hondo beats San Diego City 4-1 for first win

Coming off a 2-2 tie at Irvine Valley College on Tuesday, Rio Hondo College earned its first win of the season on Friday thanks to a 4-1 victory at San Diego City College on Friday.

The Roadrunners built a 3-0 lead at halftime and were never challenged.

Rio Hondo took a 1-0 advantage after a SDCC own-goal in the 23rd minute. Just moments later, the Roadrunners added to their lead with a goal by Havier Zaragoza in the 24th minute. And just before the end of the opening half, John Nwoko broke free to score in the 44th minute off the assist from Abraham Figueroa to send Rio Hondo into the break with a big lead.

In the second, Gabriel Igbokwe sealed the Roadrunner victory with his goal in the 54th minute.

SDCC (0-1-0) finally broke up the Rio Hondo shutout late in the contest, getting its lone goal in the 85th minute by Dalton Kinney.

Sebastian Guillen recorded three saves in goal for the Roadrunners in the complete-game effort.

Rio Hondo, now 1-0-1, returns to action on Saturday (Aug. 31) when the Roadrunners complete their two-day San Diego trip with a 11 a.m. game at MiraCosta College in Oceanside.
