Comets dismantle Knights in 85-44 victory

SAN MARCOS, CA (2/7/2020) – Friday night, Palomar defeated San Diego City college 85-44 to improve to 7-1 in conference play. In what seemed to be a close game at the half, Comets led 37-23, the women pulled away in the second half for the win.

Sophomore Melena Bland recorded her first double-double of the season as she led the Comets in scoring, 17 points, and rebounds, 11 with five offensive boards. Aaliyah Taylor, a Mission Hills product, recorded four steals against the Knights to go along with 15 points and six rebounds. Freshman Elexis Espina was another top performer. She was 4-5 from the 3-point line and scoring 12 points in the 10 minutes she played. Freshman Tiaja Bennett and sophomore Mackenna Gentry also had four steals on the night.

The Comets shot 80 percent from the free throw line, one of their best of the season, as Bland Taylor and sophomore Julie Saelee were all perfect. The women committed 17 turnovers but were able to cause 36 to result in 37 points for the team.

The women are now 22-2 overall this season as they near the end of their conference schedule. They will face opponent MiraCosta College on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. tip. The women need to win the game in order to be in the running for a conference title.
