Porterville splits doubleheader at Cerro Coso

RIDGECREST --- Catcher Hailee Smutz went 4 for 5 with a pair of triples and 3 RBI to help lead Porterville College to an 11-7 win at Cerro Coso College on Thursday. The victory came after a narrow 7-6 loss to the Coyotes to open the non-conference doubleheader.

The Pirates jumped out to a big lead early, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning and three more in the second to go ahead 7-0. Holding a 9-7 advantage in the seventh, PC put up two final runs to add some breathing room.

Porterville totaled 19 hits in the win. Mo Mosely went 4 for 5 with an RBI while also scoring three runs. Anissa Gomez (3 for 4, 2 RBI, 2 runs) and Cienna Enriquez (3 for 5, 2 RBI) also contributed to the victory.

Ally Boyd earned her first win of the season. She tossed 3 1/3 innings, allowing 3 runs and 8 hits.

Earlier in the day, Porterville's late rally came up just short. Trailing 6-2, the Pirates scored three runs in the top of the sixth and tied up the contest with a run in the seventh. But Cerro Coso was able to get the walk-off winner in the bottom of the seventh.

PC banged out 12 hits, getting a perfect 4 for 4 game from Boyd at the plate. Boyd and Enriquez (2 for 4) both had 2 RBI each.

Boyd took the loss in the circle after going the distance. She allowed 4 earned runs and 12 hits.

Porterville, now 2-8 overall, returns to action on Tuesday (Feb. 22) when the Pirates host Bakersfield College in a 2 p.m. non-conference game.
