Men’s Water Polo: Roadrunners close season with losses at SCC tourney

The 2019 Rio Hondo College men's water polo season came to an end following a pair of defeats at the South Coast Conference Championship tournament at Cerritos College. The Roadrunners suffered a 19-4 loss to Cerritos in their opening-round game on Thursday and closed the year with a much-closer 21-16 defeat by Chaffey College on Saturday.

On Thursday, Rio Hondo fell behind early as Cerritos jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Travis Wisher scored at the 1:40 mark to break the Falcons' scoring run. But Cerritos responded with nine unanswered goals. The Falcons led 11-1 at halftime and were ahead 13-1 before Matthew Alvarez scored for the Roadrunners with 6:25 to go in the third.

Jacob Ayala and Alvarez added fourth-quarter goals to close out the scoring for Rio Hondo.

The Roadrunners bounced back with a more competitive contest on Saturday but ultimately suffered the same outcome to Chaffey.

Rio Hondo closed the season with a 4-27 overall record and went 0-7 in South Coast Conference play.
