VICTORVILLE - Cornett Wright celebrated her birthday with two victories to help lead the Marauder women's tennis team to a 4-2 victory over Victor Valley, Thursday afternoon.
The Marauders went 3-1 in their singles matches and split in the doubles. Wright won the first set against Victor Valley's Vanessa McAllaster 6-4. She fought back to send the second set into a tie break before dropping the second. Wright trailed 11-10 and had match point against her but battled back to win the next three points and the match.
"I'm a little overwhelmed and excited at the same time. This is my first victory this season," she said. "I was really nervous out there, but I let myself calm down and focus. I realized it wasn't that bad and just to be calm and don't over think things too much."
Janice Thomas had no problems with Lorenne Conners with an easy 6-3, 6-1 victory. Jaime Jones was the other AVC singles' player to earn a victory as she defeated Ava Andrasi, 6-1, 6-2.
Thomas and Wright teamed together in the doubles to earn an 8-3 victory over Conners and McAllaster.
