Men's Water Polo Goes Undefeated in Arena Invitational- Begins WSC Play Next Week

Cuesta Men's Water Polo hosted the 43rd Arena Water Polo Invitational this weekend and welcomed nine teams from around the State.  Due to the difficulty of arranging a ten-team bracket, this year's tournament was set up in a match play format.  Cuesta, who lost to #1 Golden West in Thursday's pre-tournament game, swept their bracket to earn a share on the tournament title.  The Cougars, ranked #3, beat #7 Long Beach, 13-5, and unranked Merced, 17-1, on Friday and beat Miramar, 20-5, this morning, before closing out the tournament with a win over #13 Riverside, 20-10.  Cuesta's tournament sweep improved their season record to 11-1 and their 40 goals today boosted their per game scoring average to a state-leading 17.1 goals per game.

Cuesta begins Western State Conference play this Wednesday (3 PM) at Ventura.  The Cougars have won the past two WSC Crowns, among their 25 titles since joining the circuit 1983.  Cuesta has never finished lower than third place in the loop, with eight runners-up and five third place finishes to the program's credit.

Coach John Marsh led the Cougars to a 4-1 mark this week and moved into 6th place on Cuesta Athletics All Time Coaching Win List.  He now boasts 407 career wins with men's water polo and is 20 wins shy of 5th place and former CCCAA State Basketball Coach of the Year Ed Musolff's 427 victories.  The Poloists have exactly 20 contests left on their regular season schedule but are also poised to reach the playoffs for the 43rd straight season.
