Hawks Soar to 2-0 in Season Opener

Modesto, CA – The Hawks started their season on the road by participating in Modesto Junior College's quad. Since hosting Modesto is a conference opponent, Cosumnes River played against out of conference opponents, Las Positas and West Hills Coalinga. Cosumnes River College came out victorious in both games, winning each match 3 sets to none.

 Las Positas

The first match of the day saw a battle of the Hawks, with both Cosumnes River and Las Positas using a Hawk as their team mascot. Cosumnes River came out with the 3-0 victory with a strong offensive attack. Storming to a 25-15 victory in the first set, CRC hit a combined .519 in their first set with 14 kills and no errors off 27 total attempts. The second set saw a close score of 25-22 with the offense earning 11 kills on 37 attempts, but 6 errors helped Las Positas keep the game close. Regrouping in the 3rd set helped CRC run away with a 25-12 victory on 11 kills with only 1 error on 20 attempts, a combined .500 hitting percentage.

 Three freshmen lead the offensive attack for Cosumnes River College. Gillian Ayala, and Kaley Dosier lead the Hawk offensive with 9 kills apiece, with Miah Williamson's 6 right behind them. Sophomores Ashanti Cason (7 kills) and Taryn Oberle (5 kills) added to the all-around attack by Cosumnes River College. Even Abigail Hicks, the team's libero added 3 kills of her own. Freshman Giovanna Parino racked up 35 assists during the first match of her Hawk career.

 Not to be outdone, the defense for the Hawks combined for 55 digs. Sophomore Outside Hitter, Taryn Oberle lead the team with 12 digs, along with her offensive contributions. Libero Abigail Hicks added to the defense with 10 digs of her own. A trio of Freshmen, Giovanna Parino (8), Ainsley Beckman (7) and Kaley Dosier (7) helped keep Cosumnes River on the attack by digging the attacks by Las Positas.

 It is worth noting that Cosumnes River combined for 11 service aces to help supplement their offensive attack. Taryn Oberle lead the team with 5 aces. Ainsley Beckman and Abigail Hicks picked up a pair of aces of their own.

 West Hills Coalinga

After earning their first victory of the season, Cosumnes River College had to quickly regroup for their second match of the day against the Falcons of West Hills Coalinga College. The Hawks struggled early on but regrouped and overcame the early deficit for a 26-24 victory against the Falcons. Getting into the groove, the Hawks continued the pressure to take a second set victory by the score of 25-15. The third set was tough, but the Hawks pulled the match victory by taking the third set 25-22.

The offense was not as dominant as their first game, but they continued their well-rounded attack for a combined 28 kills. Miah Williamson lead the Hawk attack with 10 kills with a .444 hitting percentage. Gillian Ayala added 6 kills of her own as well as another 5 kills by Kaley Dosier. Giovanna Parino racked up 21 of the 28 total assists by the Hawks. Kaley Dosier also lead the team with 3 service aces.

The defense for the Hawks continued to be a strength by combining for 48 digs and 8 total blocks. Abigail Hicks lead the team with 18 digs to anchor the Hawk's defense. Joining her was Anna Thomas (11) and Giovanna Parino (8) to help keep the Falcons off the board. Along with her offensive contributions, Miah Williamson also lead the Hawks with 3 solo blocks. Kaley Dosier added in 2 combo blocks to help the front line defense of Cosumnes River College

Up Next – The Hawks (2-0)  look to continue their hot start against the College of San Mateo (1-1) and Los Medanos College (1-3). Cosumnes River will play against San Mateo at 3:00 pm and then play hosting Los Medanos at 5:00 pm. Last year the Hawks fell to the Bulldogs of San Mateo, while beating the Mustangs of Los Medanos.
