Rams drop season opener 23-13 to Marin

The City College of San Francisco women's water polo made its 2021 debut in the pool on Friday but couldn't come away with a win. The Rams lost by a final score of 23-13 to College of Marin in a non-conference game played at Laney College in Oakland.

Marin scored eight times in the first quarter to take an insurmountable 8-3 lead that the Rams wouldn't challenge.

Sophomores Melanie Lazaro and Melanie Beavan-Szabo provided most of the Rams' offense in the contest. Lazaro scored a team-high six goals while Beavan-Szabo had five goals. Freshman Shera Campini rounded out the Rams' scoring with one goal.

Sophomore Samantha McEnvoy totaled six saves in goal for CCSF while Linda Oconnor posted three saves.

"Melanie Beavan-Szabo and Melanie Lazaro both played a well-balanced game, contributing on defense and offense," said CCSF head coach Phong Pham. "We have many players that are still learning the game, but we feel we have a lot of potential. Our goal for the season is to continuously improve every day and every game."

CCSF (0-1) returns to action on Oct. 1 when the Rams will face Marin and Laney College in a pair of Coast Conference crossover games.
