Volleyball Drops Pair of Five-Set Heartbreakers

Volleyball Drops Pair of Five-Set Heartbreakers

Folsom, Calif. - The Solano women's volleyball team dropped a pair of five-set heartbreakers to College of the Sequoias (25-18, 15-25, 26-28, 26-24, 13-15) and host, Folsom Lake (19-25, 23-25, 26-24, 25-19, 5-15), on Wednesday evening at the Folsom Lake Classic.

Against the Giants, sophomore Mylei Moli and freshman Sammy Brown combined for 16 kills apiece with freshman Dani Rydjord chipping in 12. Defensively, sophomore Kailyn Kaiser led the backcourt with 14 digs with a pair of aces, while freshman Chris Rigney-Cruz tallied a pair of blocks. Sophomore Anaya Rodriguez and freshman Jeryn Baldonado split directing the offense with Rodriguez counting 28 assists and Baldonado earning a double-double with 25 assists and 13 digs.

"Our offense did just fine at the net and blocking," Solano women's volleyball head coach Darla Williams said. "We just didn't execute from the service line, missing 17 serves as a team. The last three sets were all won or lost by two points, and we could have used those two points in the end."

Solano dropped the first two sets to Folsom Lake before rebounding with back-to-back set wins. Brown counted another 16 kill match, adding 18 digs. Kaiser once again captured double-figure digs with 16, while Rigney-Cruz did not miss a serve on 11 attempts with a couple of aces and four blocks. Rodriguez nearly earned a double-double with 23 assists and nine kills, while Baldonado counted 22 assists.

"It was a long day with 10 sets played," Williams said. "As long as we learn and improve, that is the expectation before we hit conference play. I purposely set up a very difficult preseason so we can be ready for conference."

The Falcons (1-3) are back on the court on Friday, Sept. 3 when they head to the Modesto Tri. Solano will face Porterville at 3 p.m. before taking on Modesto at 5 p.m. Fans will be permitted, and admission is $5.
