After a scoreless first half, the San Diego City College women's soccer team put in three goals in the final 30 minutes to earn a 3-0 home win over Grossmont. Goals by freshmen Kiki Josephson, Fatima Valle, and Sydney Sanchez gave the Knights their third win of the season as they improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the PCAC.
Josephson, a defender, typically spends the first half on the defensive end of the field, but starts to push forward in the second half of games and that's what led to the opening goal on Tuesday. Sanchez dribbled up the middle and found a trailing Josephson in the box for an easy goal, her first of the season, in the 61st minute to put the Knights ahead for good.
Grossmont came back at San Diego City with four consecutive shots over the next few minutes, but goalkeeper Chloe Sevilla saved one and the others were off the mark.
Then, in the 76th minute, Valle intercepted a poor clearance by a Grossmont defender just outside the center circle and launched the ball from 40 yards out over Grossmont's keeper for a goal that caught everyone by surprise. It was Valle's second goal of the year as she gave the Knights some breathing room for the final minutes.
Sevilla made another big save in the 83rd minute and the Knights were fortunate that Grossmont's next shot by Faith Allen hit the crossbar.
In the final minute of regulation, the Knights earned a corner kick, but Sanchez saw an opening and dribbled into the box where she was fouled. She then calmly took the penalty kick and beat the keeper with a low shot towards the left post to seal the shutout victory.
The Knights will be on the road for the next three games at Palomar (Oct. 1), at Miramar (Oct. 5), and at Imperial Valley (Oct. 12). They will be back home against Southwestern on Friday, October 15 at 1 p.m.
