SANTA BARBARA, CA – The SBCC women's volleyball team started its 2022 campaign Friday night against Grossmont, the same team that ended its season last year in the SoCal Regionals Second Round.

While the match would go four sets at the Sports Pavilion for the second straight time, this time around, it was the Vaqueros who came away with the win, defeating the Griffins 29-27, 21-25, 25-21, 25-22.

"Grossmont is a solid, playoff caliber team and it was a great back-and-forth game," head coach Kat Niksto said. "What an exciting first match!"

The Vaqueros outlasted Grossmont in what was a defensive battle with a number of long rallies.

"What a great way to start our season with a revenge match win over the team that ended our season last year," said Niksto. "I was extremely proud of a couple big performances by freshmen Heidi Collins and Ava Guenther."

The Vaqueros' busy season-opening weekend continues with two more matches tomorrow at the Bakersfield Quad Tournament. Match one against Long Beach will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the second against Mt. SAC set for a 2:00 p.m. start.
