Pirates keep on rolling with sweep over Hornets

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's volleyball kept on rolling along with another three-set sweep, this one over visiting Fullerton College on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym.

With a season-best 10 kills from DiAeris McRaven, the Pirates made quick work of the visiting Hornets, winning, 25-22, 25-15, 25-15, in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.

Will Anderson added seven kills for the first-place and state No. 1 Pirates (13-1, 4-0 in the OEC), while Jake Diddy added four more aces to his stat sheet. Josh Friedman dished out 20 assists.

Leonardo Mazuco had eight kills to lead the way for Fullerton (8-8, 1-3).

Through the first half of OEC play, it's been a clean sweep of all four teams for Coast and for the season, OCC has won 41-of-49 total sets this season.

Both teams went back and forth in the opening set, with the Hornets coming within a point of the Pirates in the late stages. But, leading 21-20, a long serve by Fullerton, followed by an ace and a kill from Anderson pushed the lead up to four at 24-20. After a pair of Fullerton points made things interesting again, Sam Warren slammed home the set-winner.

It looked as though both teams would battle back and forth in the second set as well as both teams fought to a 12-12 tie midway through the set. But OCC went on an 11-1 run to pull away from the Hornets and grab a two-set advantage in the match.

Trailing 3-1 in the third set, OCC again used a big momentum-grabbing run to pull away from Fullerton as a 15-4 outburst proved to be enough to hold off the guests the rest of the way.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday at home against Golden West ... with a time change set for 4 p.m.
