Women's Basketball: Owls Open Season At Three-Day Tournament

Citrus Women's Basketball kicked off the 2019-20 season with a three-day, three-game stand at the Mt. San Antonio College tournament this past weekend. The Owls took on Barstow, Mt. SAC and Long Beach City.

In Friday's game against Barstow, the Owls took care of business and beat the Vikings 43-23. Sophomore guard Malia Rocha led the way offensively for Citrus, scoring 14 points on 7 for 18 shooting. Rocha also snatched 7 steals, and recorded 9 rebounds. Sophomore guard Jailene Rosas was right behind Rocha with 14 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

Saturday, Citrus took on the tournament host Mt. SAC. This one went the other way, as the Mounties asserted themselves and held the Owls to just a 30% field goal shooting percentage. Rocha chipped in 11 points and 6 rebounds, but was plagued by turnovers. Julie Garcia Man did a good job protecting the paint, as she recorded 3 blocked shots, a steal, and chipped in 5 points. Samantha Villa contributed 6 points and 2 steals.

Sunday the Owls would play Long Beach City. Citrus lost the game 71-26. Rocha posted 16 points to lead all scorers, but was once again plagued by turnovers. The Owls shot just 20.5% from the field in the loss.

Citrus comes out of the gate 1-2, with a whole lot of season left to go. The ladies will lace them up again Friday when they head out to Chaffey College for a 7:00 PM Southern California Regional matchup.
