Friday, October 4 - Grossmont women's soccer traveled to Southwestern College for its fifth conference game of the season (Pacific Coast Athletic Conference). The women walked away with their first conference loss against the Jaguars, holding now a 4-1 conference record (4-4-1 overall).

The game began at 1:00 p.m. in the dead heat of Chula Vista. The Griffin women started the game strong, dominating the Jaguars for the first 15 minutes and creating goal scoring opportunities that unfortunately fell flat. For the remainder of the game however, Southwestern took control.

The Jaguars played a very high defensive line that caused the Griffins to be under a lot of pressure. By taking away the space, the Jaguars forced the Griffins to make offensive and defensive mistakes that lead to two goals being scored against the Griffins.

To Grossmont's defense, Southwestern College stadium is notorious for unbelievable, far-fetched goals being scored. The first goal against the Griffins came in the first few minutes of the second half; Griffin goalkeeper, Raynee Weber, tipped an incredibly long and unpredictable throw-in into the net. The second goal was from a bouncing ball that changed direction at the last second (due to the spin on the ball).

Although the Griffin women did not play to their full potential, they played stronger in the second half than the first. #7 Carly Reese, #19 Cassandra Ekwegwo and #2 Merari Chavez each found shots on the opponents' goal, but without any luck. #24 Basia Llamas had a good second half also, as well as #1 Raynee Weber who tallied five incredible saves.

The women's next game is Tuesday, October 8 against *Miramar at Miramar College at 1:00 p.m. The Griffin women bring it back home Friday, October 11 for a game against conference leader *SD Mesa College at 1:00 p.m.
