Men’s Soccer: Rio Hondo picks up first win with 2-0 defeat of Irvine Valley

A pair of second-half penalty kick goals lifted Rio Hondo College to its first win of the season, a 2-0 victory over visiting Irvine Valley College on Tuesday in Whittier.

After a scoreless first half, Roman Delgado put Rio Hondo on the board with his PK goal at the 56-minute mark. Maxwell Rodriguez secured the win with his penalty kick goal in the 85th minute.

Yesterday, it was Jesus Rendon who helped the Roadrunners post the shutout in goal against Clovis Community College. On Tuesday, it was freshman Jiro Duenas' turn to deliver. He combined with Rio Hondo's defensive back line of Rodriguez, Brian Martinez, Alfredo Gutierrez, and Joseph Fuentes to put up the Roadrunners' second consecutive shutout.

Rio Hondo, now 1-0-1 overall, returns to action on Friday (Aug. 31) for the third of six straight home games to open the season. The Roadrunners will host MiraCosta College in a 6 p.m. non-conference game in Whittier.
