SBCC handed Canyons its first loss in women's tennis on Thursday and took control of the WSC with a 7-2 triumph in Santa Clarita.
The Vaqueros (5-1, 4-0) won their fifth straight match and 19th consecutive WSC match. The Cougars fell to 6-1 and 2-1.
At No. 2 doubles, Jamaica and Joica Buyse had control of the set at 7-3, then COC rallied to tie it 7-7. The Buyse sisters won the next two games to secure the 9-7 victory. The Vaqueros had a 3-0 lead after the doubles.
Kelly Coulson and Jamaica Buyse won in straight sets at No. 1 and 2 singles to secure the match with a 5-0 lead.
"Our No. 6, Sydney Paillon, was down 5-4 in the first set, then rallied to win 7-5, 6-0," noted coach Christina Klein. "She had a great comeback and never let up in the second set. At No. 3, Maura Mannix was up 6-2, 5-2, then her opponent came back to tie it 5-5. Maura was able to remain cool and calm as she won 7-5 in second set.
"Overall the girls performed strong and never gave up."
The SBCC Vaqueros will host the Glendale Vaqueros on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
