Pirates pull away from Chargers with 14-5 win

COSTA MESA -- A strong second half was the difference as the Orange Coast College women's water polo team swam away from the visiting Cypress College Chargers en route to a 14-5 Orange Empire Conference win on Wednesday at the OCC Aquatics Pavilion.

OCC (15-2, 3-0 in the OEC) jumped out to a 5-0 advantage before the Chargers (4-8, 0-4) quietly made things interesting with four second-quarter goals and trailed only by three at the half, 7-4.

But the Pirates turned things up and outscored Cypress 7-1 in the second half and cruised to victory from there.

Four different OCC players -- Destiny Hernandez, Faith Cuevas, Ana Nardelli and Kendall Chrisman -- each scored twice, while Alexxis Jimenez, Natalia Stanard, Elizabeth Wilkinson, Jillian Duwe, Ella Wisdom and Perla Estrada each found the back of the net once.

Annabelle Sherman started in net for OCC and held the Chargers scoreless with three saves, before handing things over to Isabella Goodrow, who went the rest of the way and posted nine saves over the final three quarters of action.

OCC will return to action on Saturday at the Long Beach City College mini tournament before returning to OEC play at home against rival Golden West College, beginning at 3 p.m.
