Santa Ana Falls 2-1 in Pitchers’ Duel Against COD

SANTA ANA, Calif. – The Santa Ana softball team let one slip away as they fell to the College of the Desert Roadrunners (2-1) on Monday afternoon in a non-conference game.

COD came off the bus ready to play, taking advantage of a couple walks as well as some defensive miscues by the Dons in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

The Dons responded right away with their own run in the bottom half of the inning as Madelyn Holzberg poked a single to right field to drive in Brandi Kirkpatrick, tying the game at 1-1.

Both teams got out of the second inning unscathed but the Roadrunners found a way to take the lead right back in the third with a two out rally to score the go ahead run.

Although Santa Ana had a handful of opportunities to even the score again, COD stood its ground and made some key defensive plays to hold of the Dons.

Kirkpatrick took the loss after throwing the first three innings and giving up two runs with five strikeouts while Emily Rosas got a no decision with four scoreless innings and four strikeouts.

SAC added another weapon to its lineup with Holzberg making her first appearance of the year. The sophomore from Beckman High went 2-3 with an RBI and a triple.

Adriana Martinez posted a 2-3 day at the plate while Kirkpatrick, Andrea Uriarte and Natalie Crawford had one hit each.

UP NEXT: Santa Ana will turn around and host Palomar College on Tuesday (2/4) in another non-conference game at 2:00 p.m. Palomar sits at a record of 3-0 after defeating Pasadena City 8-4 last Friday.
