Chabot Competes Well in Loss to Modesto

The Chabot women's soccer team showed plenty of promise in a 2-0 loss to Modesto Junior College on Sept. 22.
The match featured a midfield battle much like the Gladiators' recent contest against Reedley.
Arianna Rodriguez was solid in goal aganst Modesto. Vocal and determined Brianna Carbajal, who was voted player of the match for Chabot, paced the defense.
Ameoly Garcia Maldonado was solid at center back.
At left defender, Giselle Villegas and Elisa Campos were very capable. Holding midfielder Ariana Umildad created a lot of steals and covered up the middle. Aylin Acosta filled in admirably at attacking midfielder, with Samantha Chavez out for family reasons.
The teams battled scoreless for the first 85 minutes when Modesto scored off a corner kick. Modesto added another goal on a counterattack with Chabot pushing forward for a possible equalizer.
Chabot coach Markus Bathelt's team (2-4-1) had limited options in terms of substitutes with only 15 players. Two players were out with injuries along with key attacker Chavez.
On Friday, the Gladiators struggled at times in a 1-1 draw against strong Diablo Valley, particularly in the first half with bad touches and turnovers, according to Bathelt. Chabot still rallied to tie the contest in the 67th minute on a nice goal by a determined Celeste Macias assisted by Ivette Mendoza Ramir, on a nice through ball.
Goalkeeper Rodriguez was excellent again with seven saves.
"The girls seemed tired from the week and the fatiguing performance just 48 hours prior (against) Modesto, with heavy legs/movements and reactions to things," Bathelt explained.
The Gladiators were also affected by injuries to Alex Henson (out for the season with a knee injury) and Elma Fernandez (knee).
